Educating the public about suicide is critical for raising awareness of risk in vulnerable populations, encouraging people who need it to seek help, and advocating for intervention and prevention strategies for those at risk. When suicide is talked about safely and accurately, we can help reduce it.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth and young adults are at greater risk for seriously considering and attempting suicide compared to their straight, cisgender peers. Social stigma, prejudice, and discrimination associated with minoritized sexual orientation all contribute to the elevated rates of suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts and poorer mental health found in LGBTQ people.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to preventing suicide among LGBTQ people. As a public health organization, AFSP believes that it is our individual and collective responsibility to support the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ people.

This event aims to:

  • Elevate LGBTQ voices

  • Increase acceptance and affirmation of LGBTQ identities

  • Reduce anti-LGBTQ stigma and prejudice

  • Educate the community on what we can all do to fight suicide

  • Connect members of the LGBTQ community with local resources

  • And of course, have a bit of fun with some family-friendly drag performances!
