When you walk in an Out of the Darkness Campus Walk, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025. The Western PA chapter will use the money raised to bring those AFSP programs to our local campuses and communities in this part of the state.

Let’s Be the Voice for Suicide Prevention at Chatham University!

We hope you will join us for our first-ever Out of the Darkness Campus Walk at Chatham University!  The event is being organized by the Chatham OT department leaders and team of student volunteers. The walk aims to be a positive, hopeful and uplifting experience to raise awareness and conversation about mental health and suicide prevention. Suicide is the #2 leading cause of death in the U.S. for those ages 15-34.

Fundraising Starts With You…

While fundraising is not required to do the walk, and there is NO fee to walk, financial resources help us implement much-needed education, research, and advocacy programs in our communities. (For example, our "Talk Saves Lives" education seminar is being presented in various setting on campus.) There are 3 things you can do to jump-start your fundraising efforts:

Raise $100 before walk day and you'll get a free official Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirt. Raise $250 or more, and other incentives are available. You can view other prizes here.

Don't miss Walker Central for online help resources to maximize your participation in the event, including our free mobile apps to make your fundraising easier!

Form Teams:

You can form online teams and invite others to join. Feel free to create your own team signs, buttons, costumes, or t-shirts for the day of the event. We invite the creativity!

About the Walk and Route:

The registration and pre-walk activities start on the Chatham University campus in Shadyside (in the Quad) at 10:00 AM. We suggest you arrive early to enjoy the activities. The actual walk will be kicked off by a brief opening ceremony at 11:00 AM. The walk is done at your own pace, and the walk will take place rain or shine. The walk route is approximately 5K, but you may walk as much or as little of it as you like.

Activities at the Walk:

More will be announced as the event nears, but the following pre-walk activities will be available to all participants:

honor beads for suicide prevention support
