Welcome to the Out of the Darkness University of Michigan Campus Walk
|Closing Ceremony:||Approx. 2:45/3:00 pm|
Parking is very limited at Ferry Field, however street parking is accessible in the neighborhoods and downtown, along with a parking structure downtown as noted on the map. We suggest people parking downtown closest to our ending ceremony and either walking or busing down to Ferry Field to avoid back-tracking for their car at the end.
We will begin our walk at Ferry Field and walk through central campus to hold our closing ceremony at Ingall's Mall to increase awareness of the issue of suicide on our campus.
Encourage everyone you know to REGISTER, DONATE, and JOIN the movement to save lives!
Please help promote the event through your social media outlets! #OOTDUM
There are many more social media outlets, please use any and all to help promote the event. Tell your story about why you walk!

Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area.
Information tables hosted by student organizations, local mental health businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 12:00 pm. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.
Dogs are welcome at Ferry Field and along our walk route as long as owners bring bags to clean up after them.
We will be posting a blank memory board for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and would like to write a message or post a photograph. We also invite you to bring your own memory board for us to display along with the collective board.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience
Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
