Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Registration is free and open to the public. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Minot Walk

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Raise $150 by 09/15/2018 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!

Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk. 

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

Taco Johns – Crunch for a cause – August 2nd from 5pm to 7pm at the South Broadway Taco John’s. Bring the flyer, show the flyer on your phone, or mention the Out of the Darkness walk when ordering. This event is on Facebook!  Click here for a flyer.

Paradiso – Dine to Donate – August 23rd from 4pm to 9pm. You must have a wristband for them to honor the donation. Wristbands can be picked up at the Town & Country mall in suites 21A & 41, or send a message to (701) 720-1144 or (701) 720-5064. This event is on Facebook!

RESOURCE FAIR

Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area.  

Information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations will open at 11:00 am.  This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss. 

There will be an AFSP Minot Walk booth at the National Night Out event held August 7th on the practice field at Minot High School. 

 

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

There will be Rocks available to be painted on and placed along the walk route. If you choose to do so, please take a picture and add it to the Facebook page, Minot Rocks as well as our walk event page.

Temporary Tattoos will be available after registration! Find the table and get your Temporary Tattoo!

 

ACTIVITIES OF HOPE AND HEALING

The memory board is getting a re-vamp this year, becoming a memory line! There will be clothes pins available to pin photos, notes to loved ones, healing messages to others and more along trees!

GUIDELINES FOR REMEMBRANCE LETTERS & PICTURES:

*Pictures or letters be should no larger than 8-1/2" x 11"

*Items should be no more than one page, but may have print on both sides.

*Walkers may want to bring copies of photos or letters (versus the originals) as we will be outside in the elements, and we do not want any valuable items to be damaged or lost.

*Walkers will be responsible for picking up their items after they have completed the walk.

Honor Beads:

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience

WHITE - LOST A CHILD

GOLD - LOST A PARENT 
ORANGE - LOST A SIBLING 
PURPLE - LOST A RELATIVE OR FRIEND

BLUE - SUPPORT THE CAUSE

DAY OF WALK EVENTS

An area will be set aside for photographs. Take a picture with your Team, by yourself, or just with some friends! There will be photo frames available including a Be The Voice frame. Use these on your social media pages to spread awareness!

There will be a cookout starting while walkers are on the route and food will be fresh and ready as walkers finish!

A chance auction will be open from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm and winners of the auction will be announced during the closing ceremony.

Roses have been donated and will be used at the end of the walk to finish our closing ceremony. You can pick up a rose at the registration booth and toss it into the river!

We have received some bottles of water as a donation, but as we are unsure of the amount of attendance, please provide water if you would like some for the route. Stay Hydrated!
