About the Lawrence County Walk: Thank you for your interest in our 2nd annual Out of the Darkness Walk hosted in Lawrence County on September 15 -- the day that closes out 2018's National Suicide Prevention Week. When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
We are pleased to partner with the Lawrence County Suicide Prevention Coalition to bring this event back to our area in 2018. Read below for more information about the family-friendly walk and to get answers to frequently asked questions:
Although there is no fee to walk and there is not a fundraising requirement, every dollar raised helps the AFSP Western PA chapter bring much-needed suicide prevention and support programs to our local communities. There are three small things you can do to kick-start your fundraising work:
How is the money used? 83 cents of every dollar raised goes right into our program. Last year, we trained over 2,300 community members and professionals across Western PA on suicide prevention, including training for the entire of several school districts in Lawrence County. We are also using the walk's fundraising to train suicide loss support group leaders and provider informational resources to a number of local events. Walk fundraising lets our chapter increase those types of activities.
This website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention” or "AFSP"). And don’t miss our Walker Central website for some great tips and some great social media apps to help you promote your walk participation.
Raise $150 or more on or before the walk and receive the official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt -- with our new walk logo that launched in 2018!! The t-shirts are our “thank you” appreciation gift for any walker’s own personal fundraising and are not for sale. Only given on walk day.
Raise $20 or more and get a HOPE 3"x3" camo sticker. Only given on walk day.
Raise $50 or more and get a premium Be The Voice water bottle. Only given on walk day.
Other fundraising incentive prizes are also awarded after the walk. See those items here.
The registration and pre-walk activities take place at the Riverwalk Ampitheatre in New Castle, PA starting at 10 AM. We suggest you arrive early to enjoy the activities. The actual walk will be kicked off by a brief opening ceremony. The walk is done at your own pace, and the walk will take place rain or shine. The walk route is approximately 5K, but you may walk as much or as little of it as you like. The event and walk are dog-friendly.
Our walk is a family-friendly event that includes various pre-walk activities. We will be announcing more activities as the event nears, but already confirmed are:
Local businesses are invited to sponsor the walk to show your support for mental health/wellness and suicide prevention. Sponsorships are at $100 or $250. Benefits may include a logo on this walk website, logo on the walk t-shirts, and social media shout-outs. Download our sponsorship kit here to learn more about this opportunity.
