Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in cash and check donations at the check-in/registration tables at the GCC on Walk Day. EVERYONE CHECKS IN at the Rotary Gathering Place located at the north end of the building!
We also have a fundraising prize raffle area in the Rotary Gathering Place at the GCC. When checking in, EVERYONE receives one free raffle ticket. In addition, for each $50 you have raised by the time you check in, you receive one more raffle ticket. (e.g. Raise $200 by check-in time, and you’ll receive a Walk shirt and 5 raffle tickets.) Take your raffle tickets to raffle boxes by the prize(s) you hope to win!
Many businesses and artists donate items for prize tables. If YOU would like to donate a high quality item, please contact Walk Chair Alison Schmaltz (her contacts at top of this Walk webpage).
WE HAVE ACTIVITIES from 1:00 – 2:00 pm.
WE HAVE ACTIVITIES FOR PARTICIPANTS.
This year we will have a photo booth. We have a photographer who is available to take pictures of participants and teams.
Water and Snacks will be provided. Ice Cream will be for sale after the Walk! 10% of the profits will go back toward the Out of the Darkness Walk!
We also have several tables of information from American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), and other mental health and suicide prevention resources. Allow time to explore these tables.
This will be an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss. If your business or organization would like to get involved, please reach out to our Walk Chair about Resource Fair opportunities.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience
Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
