Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Pittsburgh Walk

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

FAQs

Thank you for your interest in the Out of the Darkness Walk for the greater Pittsburgh region in 2019! Read below for more information about the family-friendly Pittsburgh walk and to get answers to frequently asked questions:

Why Fundraising?

Pittsburgh was the 11th largest AFSP walk in 2018 – let’s keep showing them what Pittsburghers are made of! Although there is no fee to walk and there is not a fundraising requirement, every dollar raised helps the AFSP Western PA chapter bring much-needed suicide prevention and support programs to our local communities. There are three small things you can do to kick-start your fundraising work:

Personalize your walker page online. Telling your story will make those who see your page feel more emotionally connected to you and the cause. If you're a team captain, be sure to personalize your team page!

Donate to yourself, even if just a modest sum of $20, to show others you are committed to the cause. It's easier to ask others for money if they see you have also donated.

Share your page and story with others. It's OK to ask for donations! And you may have to ask several times – that’s OK too!

This website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention”). And don’t miss our Walker Central website for some great fundraising and social media tips to help you promote your walk participation.

How is the money used?

81 cents of every dollar raised goes right into our program. In 2018, we used these funds to train over 3,000 people in Western PA on suicide prevention. We are also extremely active on college/university campuses across Western PA. Walk fundraising lets our chapter increase those types of activities.

Walk T-Shirts and Pittsburgh Fundraising Incentives

Any walker (whether part of a team or not) who raises $150 or more towards your own goal on or before walk day will receive the official Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirt – which is only given on walk day. If you raise more than $150, you might qualify for an additional fundraising incentive “thank you” gift which will be mailed to you about 6 weeks after the walk.

In addition, we have local incentives specific to the Pittsburgh walk:

Teams who raise at least $2,500 will be named a sponsor for an AFSP suicide prevention event in Western PA.

The 3 top individual fundraisers (teams or individuals) are invited to help us with the dove release at the conclusion of opening ceremonies.

About the Location

Highmark Stadium is located at the Station Square complex next to the Gateway Clipper Fleet. The stadium is wheelchair accessible and is easy to access via the “T” rail system, bus, and by car. Ample parking is available for a nominal fee, typically <$10 (parking is controlled by the lot private owners). The walk is approximately 5K in length along the riverwalk trail, and we'll have a turn-around table marking the half-way point. The walk returns to the stadium. You may walk as much or as little of that length as you like, at your own pace. We expect over 2,000 walkers this year.

What to Expect at the Walk

The walk will take place rain or shine. Unfortunately, no pets are permitted in Highmark Stadium. We encourage walkers to arrive at 9 AM when registration opens, so that you have ample time to check-in and then enjoy all of the pre-walk activities we have to offer.

Pre-walk activities will include: wearable buttons; a temporary tattoo parlor; honor bead necklaces; crafts in our Kids Zone; music from Q92.9 FM; learning more about AFSP and our local chapter; community partner tables; social media photo area; and more.

Coffee and water will be available at the stadium, but no food. You are permitted to bring your own water bottle container to refill, but bottled water will also be available on the route. Wear sunscreen!

Walk opening ceremonies will start at approximately 10:30 AM and will last about 20 minutes, then we’ll do a dove release and the walk leaves the stadium for the riverwalk trail.

The walk is not competitive. After you are done walking, you may go about your day.

Activities of Hope and Healing

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

Special Note: **NO PETS or outside food may be brought into the stadium property.
**The Walk length is approximately 5K.

Interested in being a corporate sponsor for our walk? There are many benefits AND you'll contribute positively to your community.
