Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Yates County Walk

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

Walk with us to bring suicide out of the darkness in Yates County: To support hose who've lost lovedo nes to suicide; those with lived expereince; and those who have struggled or continue to struggle. These people are our neighbors, friends, coworkers, teachers, and family members. Currently Yates County has the second highest suicide death rate per 100,000 population in the nine-county Finger Lakes region. But suicide can be prevented. Together we can reaise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), funding research, education, advocacy, and support for those affected by suicide. The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Yates County direclty benefits form these funds, as the AFSP provides us with free suicide prevention materials, training, and education programs that we bring to our community -- like Talk Saves LivesMore Than Sad, and It's Real: College Students and Mental Health. Our first walk took place in September 2018, with 203 people participating and nearly $12,000 raised

Activities of Hope and Healing

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you at the walk!
