Online registration closes at noon (local time) the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Registration is free and open to the public. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
Thanks to Walkers and Donors like you, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.

The following are regulations regarding the use of tabacco products in City Parks: this is a NON-SMOKING EVENT. The use of all tobacco products, including the use of e-cigarettes, is prohibited in ALL City Parks, including beach areas owned or operated by the City, park buildings and structures, and within 15 feet of any playgrounds.

Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk.
Make sure to arrive early to allow time to explore the resources area.
Information tables hosted by local businesses, mental health non-profit organizations, and other health related resources will open at 9:00 am and will stay open until 1:00pm. This will be an opportunity to gather literature, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, promoting physical health as well as mental health, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss.
We will also have an AFSP Tent, where you will be able to find out more information about volunteer opportunities, advocacy events, survivor day events, campus walks, Interactive Screening programs, and more!
BE THE VOICE! Our merchandise tent is bigger and better than ever before! Tons of Be the Voice items, as well as OOTD and AFSP goods.
We will reserve a space for families and teams to set up tents, but no stakes please (weights are good). Space is limited and will be on a first come first serve basis. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the peaceful view of the Grand Traverse bay. Beaches and Splash pad right next to the Open Space.
Activities of Hope and Healing
Make sure to bring a picture of your loved one for our Memory Tent. Poster-boards welcome also.
Join us in our Hope Tent, where you will be able to share messages of hope for those joining us who have struggled, or are currently struggling.
We will also have a Poster Making Tent, bring an enlarged picture of your loved one to place on a poster and carry with you during the walk.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.
We will have a team photographer, so make sure to stop by and get a photo of your team!
We will have rocks for you to paint to take home with you to remember the walk by.
Water Stations will be provided along with granola bars and fruit for participants
Arrive early and car pool if possible. Parking is limited downtown TC. Parking garages are within walking distance to the Open Space. Bring a bag chair to sit and relax and enjoy the beautiful, peaceful view of the bay.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.
