Oneonta NY Experience

Join us on September 26, 2020

Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Oneonta NY Experience

While the Oneonta Out of the Darkness Walk is going to look different this year, our mission to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide has not changed. We are a strong and resilient community, united in our effort to fight suicide, raise awareness, educate our communities, support those who have lost loved ones, and support those with lived experience. We use our voices and share our stories to provide hope. We are always #TogetherToFightSuicide

Are we walking this year?

Yes! And no.

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks and your safety and well-being will always be our top priority. This year, we will NOT have a traditional, full-on walk as in years past but here's what you can expect:

At the drive thru/drop-in from 10 am - 1:30 pm on September 26th at the 6th Ward Booster Club Field, you can:

Pick up your t-shirts, Honor Beads, resources, AFSP clearance merchandise, and Luminaria! Have your picture taken and then take a walk around the park on your own or with your team (there will be walk signs and Memorial signs along the traditional route), all while following state and local guidelines. Masks will be mandatory and we kindly ask that you limit your time at the park so we can accommodate everyone who wishes to stop by.

  • For Contact Tracing purposes, we ask that you please preregister before coming to the park
  • Staff and Volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves
  • We will have hand sanitizer and masks available
  • Separate entrance and exits
  • All guests will check-in
  • Drive-thru option for anyone who does not wish to get out of their car
  • There will be an online Opening Ceremony and Honor Bead video posted on our Chapter Facebook page

What we will not be able to do on September 26:

  • Have an in-person Opening ceremony
  • Walk at the same time
  • Linger at the park
  • Provide food or drinks

A personal message from your 2020 Oneonta Out of the Darkness Chair, Bob France:

Hello Everyone and thank you for your support and patience this year! This is all new to us as well and we are trying our best. We are adhering to all NYS guidelines while still trying to give all of you a memorable “walk” experience. I hope the information listed is helpful and I really HOPE that our event on 9/26 runs smoothly. Please be patient with us and don’t forget that TOGETHER we are strong, we are resilient, and we are hopeful. Together, we can fight suicide in our communities. Thank you for your continued support and remember, on 10/17 we will have a multi-chapter virtual ceremony that will include opening ceremony, guest speakers, bead ceremony, and a remembrance video. Those details will be emailed to you prior to the event but we encourage you to save the date!

Thank you again for your support and patience. See you all on Saturday, September 26th, and please don’t hesitate to text, email or call if you have any additional questions!

Chapter Wide Celebration of HOPE and Remembrance: October 17
Online Opening Ceremony: 10:00 am on 10/17/20
Walk: Wherever you choose!

Save the date! You are invited to join the Western, Central, and South Central Chapter in a walk unlike any other we've had. Your Walk. Your Way. Together to fight suicide.  The walking is real—it's the community that's virtual this year and that community will be all of Central, Western, and South Central New York State on October 17th! It will be a Celebration of HOPE and Remembrance and we want everyone to be part of it. We will have meaningful activities the week leading up to the Chapter wide event so stay tuned and keep reading to find out how you can submit your photos, make a donation for a Luminaria to light up the night, and more!

Please Help Spread the Word

How do I raise funds?

Ask. We recognize that these are challenging times but there are many people who are willing and able to support your efforts to Be The Voice for suicide prevention. After all, suicide prevention is everyone's business and we all feel good when we contribute to the greater good of others. Here are some simple tips to help you raise $200:

  • Put in your own $20 contribution
  • Ask your significant other for $20
  • Ask your mom, dad, aunt, uncle, or other family member for $20
  • Ask a friend for $20
  • Ask your supervisor for $20 (and let them know we'd love to do a free Talk Saves Lives program for staff!)
  • Ask 4 co-workers to give you $5 each
  • Ask 2 neighbors for $10 each
  • Ask a local business owner you support for $20
  • Ask neighbors if they'll donate their cans and bottles (400=$20)
  • Ask just one more friend or family member for $20

Need more ideas? Be sure to visit the Fundraising Tips and Tools tab under "Make an Impact"

Raise $150 by 09/26/2020 and receive an official Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt!

Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional donations the day of the Drop-in. Envelopes and pens will be provided for limited contact.

Pick up your Honor Beads on 9/26 at 6th Ward Booster Club

What are Honor Beads? Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.
