Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Yates County/Finger Lakes Experience
Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. Your safety and well-being will always be our top priority, and we are closely monitoring CDC and local guidelines as we map out our options for bringing you an experience of hope and healing this fall. In 2020, the Yates County and Finger Lakes OOTD communities joined forces for this year only to demonstrate that HOPE IS NOT CANCELLED and that we are always #TogetherToFightSuicide.
This will NOT be a traditional, full-on walk as in years past. We will have an in-person, drop-by experience the day of October 4th to stop by Keuka Lake State Park to pick up your team's goodies, connect with the event committee, and participate in some self-guided stations, all following state and local guidelines. Additionally, we will have an online live event that day for all of our registered participants to connect and share our collective journey of hope and healing. The agenda and schedule will be posted soon!
Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:
- You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
- We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
- Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.
WAIT … ARE WE STILL WALKING TO FIGHT SUICIDE?
We won't be walking as a group, but encourage you to walk on October 4th on your terms: you get to choose your own course, what time you start, and who walks next to you (within safe distancing guidelines)! The walking is real—it's the community that's virtual this year. Feel free to walk around Keuka Lake State Park and enjoy the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes!
More great reasons to register:
All participants can create and join teams. This is a great way to motivate family, friends, and co-workers to join you!
Registered walkers will be emailed an exclusive Yates County/Finger Lakes Out of the Darkness Experience sign to print! Personalize it with your name and your reason for walking. #WhyIWalk
After the e-vent, you'll get a certificate of achievement to print out and show off!

Honor Bead Ceremony
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.
Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional donations the day of the event.
The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
