Welcome to the Out of the Darkness North Country Experience

This year, we’ve "reinvented" our North Country Out of the Darkness Walk into the Out of the Darkness North Country Experience.   We need to abide by state and town guidelines, and we are not allowed our normal  large gathering of people in one site.  At AFSP, our primary concern is to ensure the safety of our participants, volunteers and staff.   While there are many changes due to Covid-19 for this year’s event, it does not mean that we cannot still have a meaningful and impactful day, and we hope we can again count on your involvement..

NOTE:  We will be keeping count, and so if we reach 50 people, we may ask you to wait a few minutes before entering the Pavilion area.  When you do enter the Olympic Speed Skating Oval , there will be a one way walk-thru to stop at all the experience areas, and then around the Oval.   Additionally, masks are mandatory and must be worn at all times.

We invite you to join us this Fall for an Out of the Darkness Experience.

We are always #TogetherToFightSuicide

WAIT … ARE WE STILL WALKING TO FIGHT SUICIDE?

YES! The Out of the Darkness North Country Experience is a real walk, but while we won't be walking together on 10/18/20, we will still be GATHERING.  Join us.. then walk on YOUR terms: you get to choose your own course, what time you start, and who walks next to you (within safe distancing guidelines)! The walking is real—it's the community that's virtual this year.

We realize that nothing can substitute the experience of coming together as a large group to walk in person.   Please contact the AFSP Capital Region NY Chapter at CapitalregionNY@afsp.org for more information. In the meantime, we look forward to connecting in new ways, and we invite you to join us on this journey.

Why Register?

  • By registering for the North Country Experience , you join a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.

  • All participants can create and join teams. This is a great way to motivate family, friends, and co-workers to join you!

  • Registered walkers will be emailed updates and invites to e-vents in the upcoming months, as well as given the opportunity to participate for incentive prizes

  • Individuals who register will be invited to join AFSP at the Olympic Speed Skating Oval on 10/18/20 to pick up resources and beads as well as any incentives they may have earned (including an event shirt for all those who raise $150+)    We will have a number of stations that day to experience:

    Stations will include the below:

  • STOP #1  --  Money table (in case you have any money you want to drop off)
  • STOP #2 --   Incentives Table - If you raised $150 or more you pick up your shirt and if you earn them your car magnet or Luminaria .  You give your name & we will hand you your prize
  • STOP #3 --  Resource Table (s)
  • STOP #4     Honor Bead Pickup
  • STOP #5     Merchandise Table- you can purchase merch.
  • STOP #6     View our Lifekeeper Memory Quilts

Activities of Hope and Healing

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
