9/11/1981 - 10/25/2010. Barely 29 years old when she took a ray of sunshine out of our lives. Her life and death forever changed us.
For the 7th straight year, on September 22, 2018, I will be walking for Team Loving Lindsay to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Even sooner, her sister Mara became heavily involved in AFSP's mission, and now North Carolina's first official chapter gets the money we raise to be used locally. If we can help prevent this tragedy for someone else, our efforts will have been worthwhile.
Suicide knows no boundaries in age, race, sex or social status. Most recently, celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain completed suicide, with middle-aged adults having the largest rate increase. It is currently the 10th-leading cause of death in the U.S., and for every fatality there are 25 attempts. Yet, 90% of suicides are preventable. Without education and awareness, would you have recognized symptoms such as:
* Talking about wanting to hurt oneself * Talking about feeling hopeless *Talking about being a burden to others * Sleeping too little or too much* Giving precious possessions away * Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs * Visiting or calling to say goodbye * THEN, seeming calmer and happier?
Sadly, in October, 2010 I did not think it could happen to us. If only I had known then what I know now. Education is crucial to prevention. No one questions diabetes or a heart condition or is afraid to talk about it. Mental illness is a disease like any other and needs to be viewed and treated as such.
Please help raise awareness and end the stigma associated with suicide and mental illness. You can make that happen! Join our team and/or contribute. Any contribution will help the work of AFSP, and all donations are 100% tax deductible.
Donating online is safe and easy. To make an online donation please click the "Donate" button on this page. You can also download an off line donation form to mail to AFSP. Just be sure to designate Team LOVING LINDSAY.
