The New Heights for Nate team is going to be at it again this year to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention. It has been over a year now since we lost our good friend and a great man, Nate Maurer. While we still feel the pain of his loss, we continue to find strength in each other while keeping his memory alive by reminiscing on the good times we had and doing events like this in his honor. Nate is on our minds and in our hearts everyday and that is where he will live on forever.
Hiking Mt. Si in Seattle, WA last year was such a powerful experience for all of us that we knew it was something we had to do again. Though there were plenty of sore legs and more than a few blisters, every man and woman enjoyed spending the day thinking of the big guy while doing good for others who may find themselves in a similar situation.
This year Nate's Gaelic football team, the Pittsburgh Celtics, will be traveling to Ireland to live a dream he had of playing the sport he loved in the land where it was invented. While there, we will be hiking the Sugarloaf trail of the Dublin Mountains to honor our friend and teammate.
We hope these hikes help to start a conversation to lessen the stigma associated with discussing mental health issues and suicidal thoughts. If we achieve that we will consider this a great success, but we would love to raise as much money as possible to help the AFSP lead the charge. Any donation will be greatly appreciated (and tax deductible)!
