Thank you for your interest in the Out of the Darkness Walk for the Greater Lehigh Valley region in 2018! Now in its 13th year and over 2,000 walkers expected to gather, it's an amazing event to bring together the community to raise our voices for suicide prevention. Read below for more information about the family-friendly Greater Lehigh Valley walk and to get answers to frequently asked questions:
Although fundraising is optional and there is no minimum fundraising requirement (and no fee to walk), each dollar raised helps us deliver suicide prevention programs both in the Lehigh Valley PA and nationally. With last year's Walk fundraising, our Lehigh Valley chapter was able to educate over 1,000 people in our area on suicide prevention, as well as send our largest delegation yet to Harrisburg to advocate for public policy changes, hold our largest-ever Survivors of Suicide Loss day in Bethlehem, and contribute to over $4.6 million in scientific research grants awarded by AFSP on a national level.
There are 3 small things you can do to kick-start your fundraising work:
You are also welcome to hold your own third-party fundraiser and use those funds raised toward your individual or team goal. Contact us for supporting your private fundraiser: email@example.com
This website is designed for online donations. On the day of the walk, you can also bring cash or checks (made out to “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention” or "AFSP"). And don’t miss our Walker Central website for some great tips and some great social media apps to help you promote your walk participation.
What to Expect at the Walk: The walk will take place rain or shine. We encourage walkers to arrive at 10 AM when registration opens, so that you have ample time to check-in and then enjoy all of the pre-walk activities we have to offer.
• Pre-walk activities will include: wearable buttons; a temporary tattoo parlor; honor bead necklaces; all-ages crafts in our Kids Zone; music; the AFSP merchandise store; learning more about AFSP and our local chapter; community resource fair; social media/photo station; and more.
• Those in the LGBTQ+ community are invited to walk with our LGBTQ+ Pride team, which will meet up before opening ceremonies!
• Walking alone? You don't need to! We have a "buddy team" at the walk -- it's a great way to meet new people too. The team will meet next to the suicide loss support group tents before opening ceremonies.
• Water & Snacks will be available at the walk.
• Team captains are encouraged to bring a sign to use as a marker to assemble your team on the field. Any walker is invited to bring signs, photos, etc. to wear or carry while they walk.
• Walk opening ceremony will start at approximately 12:00 PM and will last about 20 minutes, then the walk leaves on the ironton bridge trail.
• The walk is not competitive. You are not required to complete the entire 5K. And you walk at your own pace.
• After you are done walking, you do not need to return the stage; you may go about your day. However, if you do return, we will have finish line "cheer squad" awaiting you and our AFSP store will remain open until 2:00 PM for merchandise purchases.
The walk is a 5k (3.1 miles). The walk will begin at the Ironton Bridge and continue to Bogert's Covered Bridge. You will continue to the Robin Hood Bridge and loop back around to the Ironton Bridge.

We want to spread the message that it is possible to overcome suicidal thoughts and feelings and that there are many resources available to help those who are struggling to cope. We will have a special area at this year's event for walkers to create a "message of hope" for themselves, someone they know, or just to provide strength to someone who might be struggling. Help us create a "community of caring" by letting each other know that anyone can experience suicidal thoughts but there is help, and there is hope.
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection.
The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance and a walk that unites a community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones. We all wear honor beads - each color shows our personal connection to the cause, and helps us identify others who understand our experience
