Please support our team, The "Jay" Walkers, as we walk to fight suicide in the Out of the Darkness Austin Walk .
On July 9, 2016, Jay Anthony Utz lost his battle with depression, and left us at the age of 40.
And while Jay struggled with depression, he was so much more than his depression. He was more than a statistic. He was more than one event. Jay was absolutely brilliant, generous, funny, and fun; he completely lit up the world. He was a husband, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and a best friend. He was his wife Beth's favorite person for the 17 years they were together, and he's still her favorite person today.
On October 24th, our team will walk to help increase awareness. We will walk to help remove the stigma associated with seeking treatment for mental health issues. We will walk because so many others cannot.
We walk as a reminder that those who have lost someone to suicide have also suffered a loss equal to any other loss - whether it's from disease, heart failure, cancer, etc. We're oftentimes denied the same support of our community due to the stigma surrounding our loved one's passing, because as a society we are hesitant to discuss mental health issues - to discuss suicide. We walk with a loving and supportive community.
Let's change that starting today and each day moving forward.
Our loved ones will not be forgotten. They will be cherished - their names spoken, their lives celebrated. Jay will be remembered.
We will not be forgotten, either.
Support The "Jay" Walkers as we join #TogetherToFightSuicide
We have joined a community of people from hundreds of cities across the country in support of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.
Please help us reach our fundraising goal by donating to a team member. To donate online, please select "Roster" and then choose one of the team members listed. Once you're on their page, click "Donate Now." Donations can only be made to individuals, but the total each participant raises goes toward our team goal.
All donations are 100% tax deductible and will help bring AFSP one step closer to achieving their bold goal to reduce the suicide rate 20% by 2025.
