Walk Route:

1 mile walk route with very little grade change and is paved the entire way until the gathering area at the end. Maps will be provided and signage will help folks stay on the path!

 

 

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) signature student fundraising series, designed to engage youth and young adults in the fight to prevent suicide, a leading cause of death.

Commonly Asked Questions:

Q: Is there a registration fee?
A: No, there is no registration fee to participate.

Q: Is there a fundraising minimum?
A: No, but we strongly encourage each participant to set a $100 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's work to stop suicide and receive the official walk t-shirt!

Q: Is the event/Walk family-friendly?  
A: Yes!  The pre-event and Walk are both family-friendly, and we will have activities to keep you little ones entertained. 

Q: What if it rains?
A: The event is rain or shine and would only be canceled in the instance of severe weather that would compromise the safety of our guests.

Q: Must-have items I should bring?  
A: We recommend bringing comfy shoes, bug spray, sunscreen, reusable water bottles, donations, and funds to purchase your AFSP swag!

Q: Can I bring my dog?  
A: Yes!  Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome. We will also have some doggy accessories at our AFSP Swag tent so you pup can walk the walk in style.

 

Q:  Where is the pre-walk event?
A: The pre-walk event and opening ceremony will take place on the Grove (see VTS Campus Map). The walk will also begin and end at the Grove. 

Q: What is the Walk Route? Is it accessible?
A: Yes!  The route is paved and stroller-friendly. However, the pre-walk event will take place in a grassy field which may be difficult to navigate with a stroller, especially if it has recently rained. 

Q: Where do I park?  
A: 
Parking is available on campus free of charge in the lots closest to the Seminary Road entrance, closest to Coffield Refectory and the Guest Houses. No parking passes are required. Please see the VTS Campus Map and obey all on-site parking signage.

Q: How can I get there by public transportation?  
A: 
The nearest Metro (subway) stop is at King Street, on the Yellow and Blue Metro Lines, about 3 miles away in the direction of Old Town, Alexandria. The Seminary is on the 28A Metro bus line and the 102 Alexandria DASH bus line, both of which service the King Street Metro station. Information and schedules can be found at www.wmata.com.

 

Q: How do I make an offline donation?
A; To send a donation by check, please complete this Offline Donation Form and send it with your check to the address provided.

Q: Can I register at the Walk?  
A: Yes!  You can register in-person at the Walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

Q: Will there be food/drink available?  
A: Water and light snacks will be provided by AFSP for volunteers and registered walkers.

Q: Where do I go for First Aid?  
A: A first aid kit can be found at the Walker Check-in & Registration area.

If I raise enough money, will my whole team get a shirt?
No, the event shirts are only given to individuals who raise $100. If your whole team wants a shirt, each individual member must raise $100.
